Hilton Head Island Celebrates 30th Anniversary

Celebration of the 350th anniversary of Captain William Hilton’s sighting of Hilton Head Island and the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Town of Hilton Head Island began September 30 and will continue through October 5th, 2013.
In September of 1663, on a voyage of exploration, Captain William Hilton entered Port Royal Sound and spotted a headland-a high point that would be called Hilton’s Headland, or Hilton’s Head. 320 years later, Hilton Head Island became the Town of Hilton Head Island.
A group of volunteers have organized a 350/30 anniversary blowout to commemorate both events. The Heritage Library Foundation, the Town of Hilton Head Island, Coligny Plaza, USCB Hospitality and Event Management Department, Coastal Discovery Museum, the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce, and many other island organizations are working together to plan a week-long celebration of the island.
The celebration will kick off with an open house at Town Hall on Monday, Sept. 30, 2013 and culminate in a huge beach party on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, with events in between including tours of historic sites and lectures on the area.
Saturday’s Grand Finale at Coligny Beach will include a sandcastle contest from 10 to noon, food, drinks, bocce ball and the Headlines from noon to 6 pm.

Town of Hilton Head Approves Design of
Beach Club Redevelopment

On Tuesday, June 11, 2013 the Town of Hilton Head Design Review Board met to consider the final design submission by the Sea Pines Resort for the redeveloped Beach Club. As a result of an obviously thorough evaluation by the members of the Board, the plan was unanimously approved. The members of the Design Review Board variously described the plan for the Beach Club as "excellent...fabulous...exciting." While additional approvals are necessary from the Town and the Sea Pines ARB, construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2013 with completion in spring of 2014.

Parents Magazine Names Hilton Head # 1Best Beach Town
(Printed in Island Packet, May 6, 2013)

A national parenting magazine has put Hilton Head Island at the top of its list of the 10 Best Beach Towns.
Parents magazine said the list features family vacation spots with "pristine oceans, beach safety and a boatload of inland fun."

When selecting the best beach towns, the magazine considered Natural Resources Defense Council's water quality reports, the presence of lifeguards, the number of public restrooms and beachside amusements, the number of inland activities and cost of lodging and entertainment options, according to a news release.

The Best Beach Towns, in ranked order:
·         Hilton Head Island
·         Coronado, Calif.
·         St. Pete Beach, Fla.
·         Falmouth, Mass.
·         Cape May, N.J.
·         Amelia Island, Fla.
·         Kitty Hawk, N.C.
·         Kamuela, Hawaii, The Big Island
·         Gulf Shores, Ala.
·         Rehoboth Beach, Del.

The designation "means a lot," said Charlie Clark, spokeswoman for the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce. "It's a trusted third-party endorsement, and that influences travelers."
